Two Guys Talking About Hockey

Why no minor league hockey?

I'd like to pose a question to folks. How important is it that we have a minor league hockey team in either Winston-Salem or Greensboro to spur interest?

I think it's pretty unusual for two cities of this size to both be without some form of pro hockey for two years running. And I've got to believe it hurts efforts to draw more people to the sport, especially parents who might bring children who might decide they'd like to try youth hockey.

Seems to me when youth hockey is growing, it spurs the sport in an entire region. Thoughts?

  • Greensboro certainly has the better facility than Winston-Salem for ECHL or any minor league outfit.

Future of Winston-Salem's Coliseum Annex as a rink is still unclear, too. Anyone out there hear anything recent on this or other 'private rink' deals?

  • Is the market in Winston-Salem big enough to support another pro team?

Are there enough hockey fans in W-S with disposable income to support a team?

Is the paper doing enough to fuel the interest in hockey in our community?

  • One of the reasons we started this hockey blog was to gauge the interest out there in ice hockey. There are several folks working at the Journal who are major fans (none work in sports), and we wanted to test the waters.

  • I'd like to see some minor league hockey in Greensboro. Never been a huge fan, but I like to watch and encourgage maturing athletes.
